A Second Chance for St. Luke’s Baseball

Baseball season has yet again blessed us with its presence, and so far, its gods are shining their mercurial smile on the city of Mobile. The BayBears have begun their title defense with the best record in the Southern League, powered by tenacious pitching and some clutch performances at the plate. And that winning combination has caught on with at least one local high school team. For the second time in two years of fielding a varsity program, the St. Luke’s baseball team played in the 1A state semifinals Friday. After a bitter, lingering loss that brought an end to last year’s run, the young Wildcats maintained the determination and maturity to make sure this year was different. The team, which has still never had a senior player on its roster, defeated Maplesville...

Pinterest Trend of the Week: Kale

It’s no surprise this leafy green is sneaking its way into classic recipes. Kale is a sweet vegetable that is low in fat, high in fiber and has no cholesterol. It is loaded with vitamins A, C and K and rich in iron, calcium and other nutrients thought to be beneficial in warding off certain cancers. Plus, it’s extremely versatile; bake it, boil it, steam it…or try one of the delicious recipes below. Shrimp with Kale and Mushrooms 2 tablespoons butter 1 onion, thinly sliced 1 pound shiitake mushrooms, stemmed and thinly sliced 6 cloves garlic, chopped 2 bunches Lacinato kale, stemmed and chopped into bite-sized pieces 1 1/2 pounds shrimp, peeled and cleaned 2 tablespoons soy sauce 1/2 cup dry white wine 1/4 cup heavy cream (optional) 1....

Pet of the Week: Junie

Pet of the Week: Junie

Junie was adopted as a small puppy in December and can no longer keep her. She was just 10 weeks old when she was adopted — a tiny mite at three pounds.  She is seven months old now, and weighs 17 pounds. She knows the "sit" and "come" commands. She will "flip" and is very agile. She is almost housetrained (her previous owners kept her crated most of the time as they were not home and did not have a fenced yard). She is very social with kids and other animals.  She loves to play fetch, run and play ball. Junie is always happy and has a wonderful sweet, loving disposition. She is a barker when she wants attention. Junie is very smart, and she doesn't like to be alone. If you would like to adopt me adopt me or my friends into your...

Ode to Our Mothers

In our April issue, we divulged nearly 100 tips women should know in order to refer to themselves as true Mobile Bay ladies. You learned how to polish silver, write a proper thank-you note and how to catch a Mobile Bay man. But even with this advice in tow, it takes much more to be a Mobile Bay mom. In these parts, moms are more like superheroes. They are time-jugglers, top-notch cooks, constant caregivers and business professionals. They are always sophisticated and graceful, but also possess sharp wit and one of those “you’re in big trouble” kind of looks you never want to see. They are the special people who celebrate your accomplishments and love every single gift you give them, no matter how ridiculous it may be, because it’s the thought behind it...

Pet of the Week: Crosby

My name is Crosby, and I was transferred from the County Animal Shelter. I am a calm, sweet, well-mannered little pup. I am a house dog, and I love, love, love my bed. After they tormented by children sticking things like straws up my nose, to be honest, I'm not very fond of kids anymore. I stopped them from doing that, but then I ended up on death row for protecting myself. I am 2 years old, heartworm negative and 11 pounds. Pinterest Trend of the Week: Eye-Catching Headboards

Add a little pizzazz to any bedroom with a funky, unexpected headboard—it will set the tone for the whole room. 1. Orange Fabric Headboard In these parts, you either love or hate the color orange. This season, football fans can put their team loyalty aside to embrace Tangerine Tango, Pantone’s Color of the Year. Incorporate the color tastefully into your décor with a graphic fabric headboard. Silver studs give it a polished, sophisticated look. Source: homecreat.com via Lynda on Pinterest   2. Alphabet Headboard A fun arrangement of letters in various shapes, sizes and colors adds a modern touch to a guest bedroom or kid’s room. Pet of the Week: Weeble

My name is Weeble, and I was transferred from the County Animal Shelter the very day my owners left me. They moved into an new home and did not take me with them. I had been with them all my life so the change to the animal shelter was a little stressful for me. Plus, these people at the Mobile SPCA put me on a diet! I admit I was fat, fat, fat! But I say there's just more of me to love. I am about 7 years old, female, heartworm negative and weigh 15 pounds. It’s That Time Again

It’s That Time Again

Our annual swimsuit issue has been making waves ever since the ’80s. The pictures always tend to ruffle some feathers – conservative women say we should have covered our models up more, while men ask for more skin. With a mixed audience like ours, it’s hard to find the balance, but it’s something we strive to do each year. And it never fails, the shoot itself is no easy task. It’s always one of the most fun and most stressful day (or in this case days) of the year. Weeks of planning and pulling tear sheets for inspiration go into prepping for the shoot to keep the chaos as organized as possible, all the while knowing that all that work can go out the window at a moments notice once you actually start taking the pictures. This year was no exception. I...

Pet of the Week: Lola and Louie

Our names are Lola and Louie and we are a part of an unwanted litter.  Our mom was homeless and in search of food when she managed to find shelter under a nice man's house right before we were born. We and our 2 other siblings—Lucas and Lacy—had a rough start, but we are doing just fine now! We have been in a foster home so we are crate trained and learning housetraining. We need regular puppy training and lots of toys to chew on. We are just 10 weeks old, heartworm negative, weigh 15 pounds and are growing! Pet of the Week: Bailey

My name is Bailey, and my owner could no longer keep me. I just could not adjust to the new grandchild. Squeaky little children are just not my favorite things — that's the Schnauzer in me! Just being honest! If you're not a child, I'd like to be near you all the time. When you leave me, I need a cookie to tide me over while you are gone. I mind well, know how to sit and am smart and sweet. Regular grooming is necessary. I am 4 and half years old, heartworm negative and weigh 20 pounds. Back in White

04/09/12

Back in White

In my book, the day after Easter is one of the most exciting fashion days of the year. It’s the day I wake up early to make sure my outfit is crisp and pressed. It’s the day I “spring clean” my closet, clearing a special place at the front for the new pieces to which I’ve just been granted access. Why all the fuss? It’s the 216th day since I’ve worn white. (Yes, I counted). Call me old fashioned, but there is something innately engrained in my soul that prevents me from wearing white during the post-Labor Day, pre-Easter months. Even during my college years, I never let my favorite pair of white wedges grace the soles of my feet because I knew my mother, miles across town, would probably be able to sense I was breaking the cardinal rule....

Pet of the Week: Tresemme

Hello, my name is Tresemme! My littermates and I were abandoned and left to die in the woods. Thankfully someone found us and the Mobile SPCA cared for us until we were old enough to be adopted. I am 3 months old, male, cute and am extra sweet. I weigh about 15 pounds, so I will be a medium to large dog once fully grown. I don't remember my mom, but I think she was maybe a lab or hound. I have two sisters who need homes, too. They say we are really nice puppies! We all need regular puppy and crate training, just like all 3-month-old puppies do. We would be great with kids because we are sweet and sturdy and have wonderful personalities. For more information on how to adopt me or my sisters into your family, click here.

Pet of the Week: Whirlwind

I live up to my name! I am full of fun and I love life. I am extra playful — I love to bop the other kitties on the head and run into my kitty tunnel and get them to chase me. I like people and other kitties. I’m a cat on a mission: PARTY! I am Dora the Explorer and can make a toy out of anything: pencils, post-it notes, even potatoes! If you’re looking for some laughs and someone to liven up the household, think about inviting me. I am a sweet girl, two-and-a-half years old, feluk negative, spayed and am up to date on my vaccinations. For more information on adopting me one of my friends, click here.

The Bold and the Beautiful - The Genius Behind Dyed Denim

White jeans that were oh-so-popular last spring have blossomed. And I love it! Like the scene in “Pleasantville” when the fictional black and white town begins to burst with vibrant hues, jeans have taken on a life of their own with the infusion of color. It’s a fresh trend that’s easy to wear at any age. A spin on a wardrobe staple that has been around since the 1870s, jeans are popping up in more shades than there are in a 64-pack of Crayola Crayons. From pale lemon yellow to bright cobalt blue, there’s a shade for everybody and body type. I’ve already invested in a coral/red pair, and am dying to get my hands on some in a minty green/teal tone. The key to pulling off the look without looking like an Easter egg is what you pair them with....

Madness

Last Friday morning, the folks at ESPN posted an infographic on their Twitter account, which partly underlined what makes March Madness so compelling. The caption read, “The good news: at this exact moment, you have a perfect bracket. Bad news: so does everyone else.” Slightly more than 24 hours later, they announced that two perfect brackets remained on ESPN.com. Two upset wins from Lehigh and Saint Louis later, and @espn made one final post about perfect brackets. None remained. Something inside me was comforted by the thought of sensible people across the nation wadding up their picks and shooting them toward the trashcan, three-pointers of rage and resignation. One Internet poster reported using the only remaining copy of his bracket to clean up after his dog. In...

Pet of the Week: Francey

This is Francey who was transferred to Mobile SPCA from the City Animal Shelter. She is a sweet little girl, very shy, but ready to go to a real home.  She loves other dogs and will play all day long. Francey seems to have gotten little socialization when she was a pup because she is extremely shy and very untrusting. She will eventually warm up to you and be your pal, but it will take a patient person to work with her and gain her confidence. Once she learns that people are nice she will be a great companion! Francey would do best in a quiet home with another dog. She cannot be left in the yard alone as she can climb a six-foot chain link fence! She is a chihuahua mix and is a year old, heartworm negative and weighs only 10 pounds. For more information on adopting me into...

Stuff My Groom Says

Stuff My Groom Says

Seven months from today, I’ll be walking down the aisle to say “I Do.” The venue is booked, the dress has been picked, cake tastings have commenced and somehow my poor groom is just as clueless as he was when he proposed a little over a year ago. It only took a few times of me asking whether he preferred amethyst or eggplant chiffon to realize that he had absolutely no idea what I was talking about. As I’ve learned the hard way, the little details that seem monumental for a blushing young bride translate quite differently for the groom. I can’t count on two hands the amount of times I’ve gotten “the look:” the deer-in-the-headlights, glazed-over look a groom gets when you begin to explain the clear aesthetic difference between...

Pet of the Week: Shaffer

My name is Shaffer, and I was found as a stray. I am a typical Jack Russell Terrier — very active, playful and very interested in my surroundings! I am very affectionate and will be your constant companion. I just completed a training workshop and did really well! I learned lots of commands, and now I need to go to a home where someone will continue to work with me. I am excited about learning and want to continue if someone would spend the time to teach me! I would do great in a home as the only dog because I like to have all the attention myself. A home with another dog would be okay as long as it's not rowdy and doesn’t jump on me. A home with older kids would be okay, too. Small children probably wouldn't be best because I am a little mouthy and jump and nip...

Calling All Ladies to Chat and Chew

If you could have dinner with any local writer, past or present, who would you choose? Those who attended Mobile Bay’s Steel Azaleas women’s forum in 2010 surely remember local writer Elyzabeth Gregory Wilder’s riveting thoughts on womanhood here in Lower Alabama. And now is your chance to break bread with her at The Chat and Chew Supper Club, a unique event at which Wilder will simultaneously prepare dinner and perform a monologue. “After spending the past year at home with my daughter, I found myself longing for a creative outlet and a way to reconnect with people. This seemed like a fun way to combine all of those things into one unique event,” says Wilder. While fellow women watch her cook supper, the young mother and playwright will address...

My name is Gage, and I was originally found as a stray searching for food in the parking lot of a CVS pharmacy. I was adopted shortly after, but the dog already living there kept beating me up (he was a bully), so that home didn't work out.  I went to another home, but spent too much time alone so now I am back and am looking for another — a forever — home.  I do know how to sit and shake, and have just gone through more obedience training here at the shelter.  I am crate trained and just a good all around mutt!  Although I just turned one year old, I still have a lot of puppy in me.  I like to chew, but am growing out of it more every day.  I love children!  I like to toss my toys in the air and see if I can catch them with my...

Oscar Buzz

Every year for as far back as I can remember, I have watched the Oscars. It’s Hollywood’s night to honor the best while looking their best. When I was little, I would stay up way past my bedtime, anxiously waiting for them to announce the Best Picture (even though half the time it ended up being some movie I’d never heard of and would probably never get to see because it was rated R). For whatever reason, mostly the glamorous dresses, the night has always seemed magical to me. In my opinion, one of the more memorable moments of this year’s ceremony was Octavia Spencer, a fellow Auburn graduate (War Eagle!) and Alabama native, winning the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Minnie in “The Help.” I’d seen the...

This One’s For The Boys

As the 5-minute timer ticked at the bottom of my screen, I rushed to type my credit card information and seal the deal on what I believed to be the most amazing bargain on concert tickets I had ever seen. Floor seats at the upcoming concert of one of my fiancé’s favorite bands were going to be the perfect Valentine’s Day present. The location and price of these tickets were such a steal, it almost seemed too good to be true.  That’s probably because it was. Approximately 15 seconds after I received my purchase confirmation email, the sad reality of what I had just done became clear. Parking passes. That’s right, parking passes. I hadn’t snagged amazing seats at the concert; I had snagged an amazing space in the parking lot. Now what?...

Let (most of) the speculation end and the anticipation begin. After musician Jack White broke the news Friday that he would be performing at the Hangout Music Fest, festival organizers have followed suit and dished out the other artists playing in Gulf Shores this May. Headlining the event with White will be frat-party favorite Dave Matthews Band, along with other big names like Randy Newman, Wilco and the Flaming Lips, who were one of the highlights of last year’s weekend and will reportedly play an entire set of Pink Floyd’s “The Dark Side of the Moon.” As with any good music festival, the 2012 Hangout Music Fest offers something delicious for music fans of nearly any palate.  Old darlings (Newman, DMB) will take the stage right after newer talents...

My name is Gideon, and I was found walking in the middle of a busy road. I recently had a sleep over at a foster home and they were very impressed with my excellent behavior! I am calm and easy going. I didn't care about the kitties.  I played well, chasing balls with a 5-year old boy — I even loved it when he hugged me!  I got to horse around with their dogs.  I didn't get on the furniture.  I didn't jump on them when I got excited! There were lots and lots of interesting things to chew on, but I didn't touch them.  I took long naps.  I rolled on my back and got belly rubs.  I guess you could say I am maturing! I am a calm and friendly guy. I will sleep at the foot of your bed and watch TV with you in the living room on the couch. Playing with dog toys and eating my dog cookies is so much fun for me. (Don't ask me to fetch the newspaper, though, because I will take it and shred it!) When it's bath time, I am good, which is helpful as I will need to be groomed regularly. I am 3 years old, am heartworm positive and weight 35 pounds. I look heavier because I have all that nice colorful hair! If you want to bring me home, click here for more information.

My brothers and sister were all adopted, and I am the last one that needs a home. I am a very nice puppy who is smart and eager to learn. I am learning crate training and will need regular puppy training. I have a darling underbite. I will be a medium sized, great family dog. I like other dogs, and I love to play! Spring Awakening

01/24/12

Spring Awakening

Mobile’s winter can be harsh — no, not in a bone-chilling cold, blinding blizzard kind of way, but in a dull drizzle, muggy gray kind of way. While our cold season is relatively short compared to the rest of the world, the dreariness outside makes it seem to last forever. For some reason, this seems to have a drastic effect on my style. From the start of December through the end of February, my wardrobe is full of blacks, navys and grays. At first, these outfits start out a classic, chic and sophisticated, but about midway through the season they start to become stale, boring and monotonous. And I start to daydream about the promising bursts of color that spring runway shows have foreshadowed. This spring’s color palette seems to be a combo of both bold and...

I can jump really high.  A 6-foot fence and another dog to play with would be great for me.  I love toys!  I like to run around the yard and play chase with a toy in my mouth.  Then I hide my toy in a safe place.  I also love to play with kids. Whoa, Babies!

“Don’t drink from the water fountain unless you want a sweet little bundle of joy nine months later!” We utter this phrase often around the Mobile Bay office— roughly once a month to be exact. That would be about how often we add a staff member or freelancer to our ranks of expectant mothers. (MAWSS is conducting an ongoing investigation into our H2O makeup. I kid.) Truly, we are a very small staff, yet we’re expecting half a dozen babies — one per month through this June. Yes, PMT Publishing is well on its way to filling an entire Little League infield. In the meantime, our male co-workers are bombarded with more detailed discussions of ultrasounds, blood pressure levels, cravings and hormonal changes than even the baby-daddies must endure....

Cooked to Perfection

With the start of a new year comes the inevitable creation of a new list of resolutions. On Christmas morning, “Santa” brought me a nice collection of new appliances and tools for the kitchen. New pots and pans, glass bakeware, cookbooks and a wide variety of utensils left me pondering what hint Santa’s little elves were trying to leave me. As I flipped through each glossy page of the new, crisp cookbooks, it became evident that I was a cooking rookie. I stumbled upon recipes that had me questioning what in the world lentils, chutney or a crème fraîche was. I can’t help but blame my college years as the reason my idea of cooking is placing a bowl of “Easy Mac” into the microwave for exactly 2 minutes and 59 seconds (unfortunately...

Happy New Year, At Long Last

Happy New Year, At Long Last

Let me begin by wishing you a rose-colored and productive new year. I hope everyone managed to stomach at least a spoonful of black-eyed peas and collard greens. This New Year’s Eve marked my first here on Mobile Bay, in the Central time zone. For the first time in my life, I watched a cheddar cheese-colored Dick Clark count down the seconds to 11 p.m., and didn’t know what to do with my hands when we got there. Through the confusion, my celebration persevered, and I was able to butcher the words of Robert Burns’ immortal “Auld Lang Syne” twice, while helping myself to a few additional servings of champagne. What I celebrated most on Dec. 31, 2011, however, was a finally “adios” to what was, in the words of columnist Dave Barry,...

Scoutin’ About

I’d been practicing what I was going to say for weeks. All I had to do was walk down the street and knock on the door. How hard could it be? Like pulling off a Band-Aid, I thought it would be best to just get it over with. So, I took a deep breath, marched up to my neighbor’s door and knocked. And he answered — in his underwear. As a fourth grade Girl Scout, I was shocked. I had enough trouble remembering my talking points about Girl Scout cookies when I was talking to a fully clothed 80-year-old woman let alone a half-naked twentysomething-year-old guy. But such is the life of a Girl Scout. Next week elementary-school-aged girls decked out in green uniforms will be taking over the Bay area. Armed with their order forms for Thin Mints, Tagalongs and Samoas,...

My name is Angie, and I was transferred from the City of Mobile animal shelter as part of the Maddie's Pet Rescue Project.  I'm very well mannered and am a great dog all around.  I knows the "sit" command, get along well with other dogs, and I'm crate trained.  You'll agree that I'm a fantastic companion. A terrier mix, I am about 3-years-old, heartworm positive and on treatment. I weigh just 44 pounds and am really a sweet sweet girl. Pet of the Week: Farley

My name is Farley and I was found at Lowes shopping for a doghouse in the lawn and garden section. Farley's foster dad reports that he is housetrained and crate trained.  This pup gets to frequent a local park and plays well with other dogs.  He walks well on a leash. Does your dog or two legged child need a playmate?  Farley just may be the dog for you.  Call the office at 633-3531 and make arrangements to meet and fall in love with Farley. He is 8 months old, heartworm negative and weighs 30 pounds.

All for the Little Ones’ Christmas Cheer

All for the Little Ones’ Christmas Cheer

A big, fluffy white beard. Rosey cheeks. A plump little belly. A fuzzy red suit. Apparently, this merry image that brings joy to the hearts of youngsters the world over strikes pure terror in the mind of my almost 2-year-old. After her traumatizing experience, she informed me that “Santa NOT a princess, Mommy!” Magical as he may be, I think he would agree with that statement, too. So this here blog is one Mommy’s most sincere apology to jolly old St. Nicholas of the Bel Air Mall precinct. Thank you for braving the toddler tears and tantrums, all for the sake of memories — and the family scrapbook! Sweet Santa tried every trick in the book to get a grin out of our girl — high fives, elf talk, bribery with crayons and even a rousing rendition of...

My name is Leo, and I was transferred from the city shelter as part of the Maddie's Pet Rescue Project. I was adopted as a pup — almost a year ago — but now my owner is moving and won't take me with him. I am a sweet boy. I will fetch anything you throw. I am smart and listen to what you are saying. I am eager to learn! I love people and am a friendly and fun guy with lots of energy. I am one year old, heartworm negative and weigh about 44 pounds. I LOVE to cuddle and know I am a lap dog. I am a big 'ol brown dog with a heart of gold! To adopt me, contact the Mobile SPCA at 633-3531 or complete an online application.

Pinteresting New Holiday Ideas

I realized today that in less than two weeks, Christmas (my favorite holiday of the year) will have come and gone. As a kid, I would anxiously await all of the ridiculous traditions my parents forced my sisters and I to participate in. Whether it was decorating the family gingerbread house or getting scolded by my mom for eating all of the chocolates out of my candy Advent calendar by Dec. 3, Christmas was the best time of year to try out fun new recipes, crafts and decorations. With just a few weeks left to celebrate the holiday season, take advantage of your down time and get a little creative! Just to get you started, I’ve listed some of my favorite creative recipes and DIY projects from pinterest.com. (Click on the link to sign up and follow us!) Who knows? Maybe one of...

Need One Ticket

The rematch was the right thing to do, and deep down you know that. No matter where your allegiances lie, you must realize Mike Gundy and his trigger-happy band of Cowpokes do not deserve to step foot on the same grass Les Miles feeds on. You surely also realize — again, look deep into the stringy mess of pumpkin guts that is your football fandom — that Alabama gave LSU all it could handle on November 5, and was one made field goal away from being on the opposite end of this same discussion. But that game was a month ago yesterday, and it’s time to look ahead. Nick Saban has already predicted a game with “a different flavor,” and as always, I must agree with the crimson overlord. I’m boldly predicting at least one touchdown this time...

My name is Maggie and I was transferred from the city shelter as part of the Maddie's Pet Rescue Project.  I was adopted as a puppy a year ago, but my owner had to return me because she has cancer.  I love to play catch and chase balls. I can sit and give you kisses.  I am very happy and bubbly.  I am a lap dog that loves all the attention.  I am gentle with kids and all other animals. I am a year old, heartworm negative and have the sweetest polka dotted ears. To adopt me, contact the Mobile SPCA at 633-3531.

Pet of the Week: Jackson

Pet of the Week: Jackson

My name is Jackson, and I was found as a stray puppy and adopted shortly after. My home had a 4-foot fence, which I can easily jump now that I have grown. My owners were afraid that something bad would happen to me so they returned me to keep me safe. I am a Husky mix (Look at my beautiful eyes!), am sweet and gentle for my size and I just want to be inside with the family. Also, I like to fetch the ball. At just a year old, I am heartworm negative and weigh a healthy 71 pounds. I am polite and do have good manners. I'm a fun dog who knows how to sit and am eager to learn more. I walk very well on a leash and love to go for walks. I love kids and other dogs and am the perfect family dog. I would be a great addition to your family just in time for the holidays! For more...

Hip Hip Hooray for Christmas Vacation

The turkey is all gone (well almost) and the pumpkin centerpieces have been put away. Faster than you can unfasten a button (usually the top one on a pair of now-too-tight jeans) Thanksgiving is over and Christmas is right around the corner. Out of respect for turkey day, every year I force myself to hold off on all Christmas-esque festivities (except for listening to Christmas music, because that’s pretty much impossible) until Thursday evening. This can be harder than one might expect, especially when one works for a magazine that works two months in advance. (Here at the MB office, December has come and gone and we’re well into January). And it doesn’t help that nowadays department stores start decking their aisles with all things red and green on All Saints...

Mad for Plaid

Mad for Plaid

I’m beginning to come to terms with the fact that my closet and I are in a love-hate relationship. Each fall, we battle it out to see who will win the fashion war. Not only do we compete to see which articles of clothing no longer fit and which ones have fallen off the trendy radar, but we always get stuck in a color theory deadlock. The second I hear the words “fall colors,” I immediately think of the typical Thanksgiving-ish hues of burnt orange, yellow and red. Sure, there is nothing wrong with these colors. I get the warm and fuzzies just as much as the next person thinking about the holiday season and eating copious amounts of turkey and pecan pie. But when it comes to fashion in the fall, there are some days that donning black, brown or some other dark,...

The Art of Music

11/17/11

The Art of Music

Pop quiz, class. Question No. 1: Define art. The most common answer: I know it when I see it. This, my friends, is art, if I’ve ever seen it. As a part of the grand opening events for the new Broussard’s Piano Gallery and Academy of Music, the company has teamed up with local artist Devlin Wilson and the Mobile Arts Council. Wilson was commissioned to create a (literally) grand painting in honor of the festivities. His bold, prolific mural depicts an array of quintessential Mobile scenes – on the blank canvas of a grand piano. Bayscapes, fishing boats, Azalea Trail Maids, fountains and brass bands wash over the surface enveloping ivory keys. Imagine how delightful a rendition of “Sittin’ on the Dock of the Bay” must sound when played on such an...

I would be best for older kids because I might accidentally knock a little one over with my tail! I need regular puppy training as I am still a puppy. I'm pretty smart and very eager to learn new things! I am just 9 months old, heartworm negative and am 50 pounds of fun! The office folks heard my cries for help and were able to distract the mean dogs.  I ran so fast, right into the front door of the building and I was saved!  I had several wounds that have now healed. I am a happy boy who loves to carry a toy around like its my buddy. I was adopted, but my owners had to return me. I love older kids, but do not have patience for little ones who chase me. I love to snuggle and have my chin rubbed.  I get so excited when I go for a ride in the car!  I am 2 years old, heartworm negative and am 24 pounds of fun! Deer Season

Deer Season

Well it must be Christmastime again, because the nightmare-sized plaster reindeer is back in front of Pinebrook Shopping Center on Airport Blvd. Its proposed angle of takeoff, dangerously low, always fills me with Christmas cheer, as well as some Christmas fear, at the thought of having my SUV turned into a convertible by the red-nosed reindeer's kicking hooves. What’s that you say? The stag is actually a year-round bit of strip-mall decor, like a holiday-themed inflatable gorilla? Are the good folks at Pinebrook really that festive? Don’t get me wrong, Pinebrookers (Pinebrookies?), I love the holiday season as much as Tim Allen loves making movies about the holiday season. Brew Ha Ha

Tucked away in Abita Springs, La., lies Abita Brewing Company, the oldest craft brewery in the Southeast. Like most folks I enjoy a cold one from time to time, but by no means do I consider myself a cultured connoisseur of beer, so when I went with a group of friends to New Orleans this weekend and one of them suggested that we stop by the brewery for one of their tours, I was a little skeptical. But it sounded interesting and it definitely wasn’t something I’d done before, so I was game. Each tour at the brewery lasts for one hour, during which you get to sample all the beers they have available on tap, which includes standards like Andygater, Jockamo I.P.A. and Purple Haze, seasonal beers like the Christmas Ale and harvest beverages like Pecan Ale. You get a decent...

My Happy Place: Kidz Klozet

You’ve seen those couponing fanatics on TV. They prepare their lists weeks in advance, buy multiple sales papers, go online for special codes and scurry up to the check-out counter with 57 1-gallon jars of pickles. Here’s a much easier alternative way to save! As a mom of a 21-month-old daughter and her little brother due in March, my eyes are always peeled for a deal. But, with our crazy schedule, I don’t have time to sit around snipping newsprint all day. Enter Kidz Klozet. Much to my husband’s (and bank account’s) dismay, I have a slight obsession with the local children’s clothing warehouse located in the old Hancock’s Fabrics building behind Wings on Airport Boulevard. Port City Pride

Another BayFest weekend has come and gone, and I can’t help but feel a little bit of pride for the Port City. As the 17th annual music festival hit the streets of Mobile, crowds of music lovers gathered together for a weekend of great music and good fun. But beyond the fun and games, over the years, it seems BayFest has rejuvenated life back into the city. As a Mobile native, I’ve grown up defending its legendary battleship and beautiful gardens to all of my big-city friends who can’t seem to find the unique beauty in this city. St. Louis may have an arch and New Orleans the French Quarter, but Mobile has something many places don’t have. Mobile is a city with pride and heart. The Mobile Bay area is populated with citizens who care deeply about the future...

The Bear of Thank You’s

About three weeks ago my wedding invitations went out and literally the day afterwards, I began receiving wedding gifts.  It’s great to come home and see a big box on your doorstep, and it hasn’t gotten old yet. Along with gifts comes the responsibility of thank you notes. They are very important (and if you don’t send thank you notes then shame on you).  About six months ago, I made a very organized spreadsheet and had the best intentions of keeping every gift by each person's name so I knew who to send thank you notes to and for what. (P.S. Please avoid sending a note that says, “Thank you so much for your gift.” Honestly, take the time to thank them for what they actually gave you — the vase, the plate, the corndog maker....

A Proposal: Fall Wedding Ban

On the heels of Mallory Boykin’s blog discussing Mobile’s proposed “pants-dropping law”, I would like to propose a controversial and frivolous legal move of my own: no more weddings on fall Saturdays. My brother, God help him, got married to the woman of his dreams last month. The couple seemed happy as larks. The sun shone coolly on their picturesque location in Maryville, Tenn. The cupcakes were as delicious as love itself. I think I even heard birds chirping. Yes, the wedding was simply disastrous. That’s because, instead of that shrill chirp, I should have been hearing something else: the roaring crowd and commentary of the Tennessee-Florida football game. These people were getting married at the same time as an SEC football game! In the...

All the Young Dudes

Ever since this whole ban on saggy pants thing got started a couple of months ago, this immortal scene from the iconic ’90s movie “Clueless” has been on instant replay in my head. Mobile’s city council voted against taking on a crime that has plagued us girls and members of the Fashion Police for years – boys with sagging pants - in an attempt to fix the teen crime problem in downtown Mobile. While I do think that the proposed teen curfew could have helped calm the streets — baggy pants? I don’t think so. Just how were they planning on enforcing this anyway? I mean what’s to stop droopy drawers from taking off his belt once no longer in the presence of a police officer or he leaves an establishment, much like a girl would shed...

Independent Restaurant Queen G debuts on Sundance Channel

Popular independent Mobile restaurant Queen G’s was featured this fall in a new Sundance channel reality show called “Ludo Bites America” featuring 5-star chef Ludo Lefebvre. The show strives to put a spin on a new local favorite each week via a pop-up restaurant concept in which featured French chef Lefebvre takes charge of the kitchen for a meal. The producers of the new show indicated the desire to feature a community greatly impacted by Hurricane Katrina, but did not wish to choose New Orleans like so many previous series. Mobile’s presence as a Gulf Coast hub with a distinct ‘Southern’ feel made our Port city the obvious choice. The excitement began last January when Carolyn Mathers of Queen G’s restaurant answered a phone call...

Keep Calm and Carry On

I think every bride has something happen that throws her off her perfect game. The flowers went wrong, one of the groomsmen got the wrong outfit, the event planner brought the wrong toast glasses, etc.For me it was something a little different. Last week my dear future mother-in-law received a call from the manager of our rehearsal dinner location explaining that due to a severe fire they had to completely cancel our event.Um, ok…I’m about six weeks away from my wedding, and for some reason I didn’t think this was a big deal. I thought, “Hey, there are plenty of fabulous places on the Eastern Shore.” I failed to realize that October is one of the busiest wedding months in the Bay area and there are dozens of other brides going through the exact same thing...

The Wedding Singer

I had the hardest time finding a band to play at my wedding, but not for lack of choices. They all seem to be owned by one or two agents and most of them were very similar in style and offered the same playlist. For me, picking a band was overwhelming. There are a couple of semi-local booking agencies whose websites you can peruse and listen to 50 different bands perform a killer rendition of “YMCA” by the Village People. Where was the variety? To narrow my choices, the first thing I did was set a budget and omit the bands from the list that didn’t come within the budget. Once I did that, I narrowed down the choices to bands who would work with me directly and not through a booking agent. (Money saving tip: If you have the time to deal with booking a band yourself, my...

Battles Wharf Market

I have literally driven past this building thousands of times in my life. Growing up, I would occasionally go inside for a cold drink or gas, but I never really paid too much attention to what it had to offer. Likely because during my childhood and adolescent years, it didn’t have that much to offer except the basic gas station fare and bait.A few years ago I would hear my stepfather talk about how the local men would meet there in the mornings before work to drink their coffees, read their papers, and tell their weekly stories. But I still didn’t pay that much attention to all the rave about Battles Wharf Market. A few months ago, my husband convinced me to meet him there for lunch. I was surprised they even offered a “lunch,” and honestly, I was a little uneasy...

Summer Pairing: Grilled Sockeye Salmon and Pinot Noir

‘Tis the season for wild sockeye salmon! This fish is known for its beautiful red color, firm texture and full flavor, but you better hurry—there are only a few more weeks left to enjoy seasonal wild–caught sockeye.White wines generally come to mind when considering a wine to complement with fish. Grilled salmon, however, pairs very well with pinot noir. Velvety in nature with low tannins, pinot is just big enough to stand up to the full, rich flavor of salmon without overpowering it.“What grows together, goes together,” is a common reference to pairing wine and food. Playing into this thought, landlocked locations for salmon include Oregon, which happens to be where one can find good pinots. (For those who prefer a white wine with salmon, try a pinot...

Treehugger 4: Duffie Live Oak

This, my fellow nature lovers, is what we call “The Big One.” The Duffie Live Oak, which is located at 1127 Carolina Ave in downtown Mobile, is considered the oldest living landmark of the City of Mobile with an estimated age of more than 300 years. Once referred to as the “Seven Sisters Oak” due to the tree’s main limbs, this prime specimen is the namesake of Mayor George A. Duffie whose home was located nearby the tree in 1878. An adjacent plaque, installed in 1977 by the National Arborist Association,” recognizes this tree and commends those who had the vision and foresight to preserve it.” Pictures cannot do this beautiful giant justice. This live oak is an awe-inspiring miracle of nature that must be experienced in person. Join me again...

One of the first things that went through my mind after getting engaged was, “I need to be in unbelievable shape on my wedding day.”I’ve always been a regular exerciser, but there’s something about being the star of your own event that provided me with a whole new level of motivation to whip my booty in shape, literally.About four months ago, I decided to try out a Pilates class at the Bounds YMCA in Daphne. How hard could it be? I have ran half-marathons (ok, I did one) and completed a couple of sprint triathlons so I thought I was already in decent shape. Pilates class taught me I was not.I would dare any man to try to complete a Pilates class without trouble. You can’t. I took my fiancé once (who at the time was in way better shape than I was),...

Mobile Tree-hugger 3: Andrew Jackson Live Oak

This week’s Mobile Tree-hugger features an extraordinary specimen that played a significant role in U.S. history: the Andrew Jackson live oak, a beautiful representation of Baldwin County’s lush natural landscape. In November 1814, General Andrew Jackson scaled the massive forking branches of this tree in order to address his troops before battle. After the historic rally, Jackson’s army went on to capture Pensacola, located in what is present-day Daphne. The Battle of Pensacola was yet another triumphant battle commanded by Jackson during the ongoing War of 1812.You, too, can take part in the legacy of this famous Quercus Virginiana by going for an afternoon stroll at Knoll Park in Fairhope only a few minutes away from U.S.A.’s Baldwin County Campus. How to Get Your Gigs Together

Everyone knows the importance of a well-organized workspace. From desk supplies superstores like Office Max to Vera Bradley’s pretty printed folders, not to mention blogs upon blogs dedicated to organization, it has become difficult not to have some sort of organizational system in place at your desk or in your home office. It increases productivity by minimizing distractions and allowing you to focus on the task at hand. However, that idea does not usually carry over to one’s digital workspace. We tend to think of our computer hard drives as limitless, carelessly clicking “save as” and paying no attention to where the file will end up. We fail to realize that digital disarray is almost worse than physical clutter, making it nearly impossible to locate important...

Mobile Tree Hugger, Part II: The Legend of the Charles Boyington Oak

In the northwest corner of the Church Street cemetery, near the grave of Joe Cain, grows an ancient live oak rumored to be haunted. The tree’s namesake is Charles Boyington who was convicted of murder and sentenced to death in Mobile, February 20, 1835. A man named Nathaniel Frost had been found stabbed to death in the Church Street Cemetery several days before.Frost had a large sum of money saved, and Boyington was unemployed and destitute. Frost offered to help Boyington, and they were last seen heading to the cemetery where Frost was to teach Boyington how to carve a wooden heart for a loved one. After Frost’s body was found, Boyington was arrested fleeing town aboard the ship James Monroe that sailed from Mobile to Montgomery.Although the circumstantial evidence...

Mobile Tree Hugger

Mobile is famous for the historic oak trees that surround our city. Many of these beautiful trees have been left untouched for centuries even as civilization has sprung up around them. As a proud Mobile tree-hugger, I will be visiting beautiful trees around the Mobile area hugging Mother Nature’s finest. My first visit was to this leggy live oak, which overhangs a pond adjacent to the USA student library. I was able to identify this tree thanks to “The Living Earth Book of North American Trees” by Gerald Jonas. Jonas describes the southern live oak as, “a semi-evergreen tree that grows 40 to 80 feet tall with massive spreading crown and contorted branches.” This gnarled specimen certainly fits the bill, and is a prime example of a tree unique to the Gulf...

Vintage shopping can be intimidating. Discount shopping can carry a stigma. Yet, it seems as if the most desirable piece of every fashion-forward girl’s outfit comes from a thrift store or consignment shop. In the past, Goodwill was my only foray into the world of second-hand clothing. I didn’t think it was worth the required effort because I believed that finding a show-stopping item was rare. More importantly, I was almost certain that we didn’t have the resources for quality vintage shopping in Lower Alabama. However, I was quickly informed otherwise by a simple Google search. Armed with directions, a free afternoon and a lot of determination, I set out to find my own second-hand treasures.Seconds on SageSeconds on Sage offers quality clothing at low prices, like...

Historians say the game arrived in Mobile around 1860, citing the documented impact America’s pastime had on two foreign students enrolled at Spring Hill College. Brothers Ernest and Nemesio Guillo, of Cuba, arrived in Mobile in 1860 and quickly took to the popular sport being played on campus. After graduation, Nemesio returned to Havana with the first baseballs and bats the island had ever seen. He went on to teach locals everything he had learned on Mobile’s diamonds, eventually spreading a craze that still captivates Cubans today. In America, Mobile has produced more Hall of Famers — five — than any city not named New York or Chicago....

Rosé: A food-friendly summer wine

As summer nears, many wine drinkers tend to switch to beer, white wine or lighter bodied reds. An alternative that most do not consider is rosé. Rosé’s reputation has been tarnished, in part, due to the misconception that it is a sweet wine. When most Americans think of rosé, they associate it with white zinfandel, a sweet blush wine. Most rose, especially European produced rosé, is dry. Rosé’s color may vary from orange and pale pink to purple. It is usually made from a blend of red wine varieties and gets its lighter color from limited exposure to the grape skin during fermentation.Rosé is one of the most food-friendly wines. It is served chilled and pairs well with many summer favorites including barbecue. Charles and...

Wedding Photographer? Check.

Wedding Photographer? Check.

After months of debating which photographer to use for my wedding, I’ve decided to go with Admoni Photography in Mobile. And I’m psyched. The reason? Owners (and married couple) Keegan and Robby have a photojournalistic style with wedding expertise. For my needs, it’s a combo you can’t beat. As self-proclaimed photography ninjas, I’m looking forward to all the amazingness they will capture on my most important day. Check them out at www.admoniphotography.com.I’ve decided to also do a bridal session the week before the wedding so they can capture me in my fabulous wedding attire minus the waterworks that will surely be involved with the real day. And it gives me another chance to get all dolled up in my wedding gown. You don’t need to twist my...

Wedding Logo in Use

Wedding Logo in Use

The first way I am using my wedding logo is for my Save-the-Date.Here’s how:1. I purchased silver envelopes and green envelope liners to keep with my wedding colors on silver, green and white from www.paper-source.com. Their stuff is fabulous and not expensive. 2. Then I ordered custom stamps from www.zazzle.com with my logo on them. You can also do stamps with engagement photos or whatever you like. Custom stamps will cost more than regular stamps, but I’m only sending my save-the-dates to out-of-town guests so I didn’t have to order that many.3. My friend Diana who created the logo also created the card. It’s simple and clean just like the logo. Please excuse my amateur snapshots (photography is not my strong suit), but this will give you an idea of what the...

Where Did All The Time Go?

Where Did All The Time Go?

Where did all the time go?Back in December 2010, during the first month of my engagement, I thought I had all the time in the world to plan my wedding. I booked the church for October 2011 within days of the proposal (as y’all know), and then took a breath and didn’t worry about too much else. We had a priest and a church; I was good, right? Sure I’ve given certain things like my dress consideration but haven’t made one wedding decision in at least six weeks. Now all of the sudden my big day is only seven and a half months away and there are dozens of decisions to be made! No wonder people hire wedding planners. Being a planner myself, I can’t convince myself to hire someone else to plan my event. It seems unnatural. Plus, I would never expose another...

Brand Your Wedding

Brand Your Wedding

I’m an advertising girl, and so I naturally think everything should be branded from top to bottom including my wedding. It’s my way of making it completely unique.I’ve been to weddings where the theme is what sets the couple apart. For example, the couple got engaged on the beach so their reception incorporated seashells. But I recommend taking this a step further and building a logo or wedding monogram that is completely your own.I have my friend and uber-talented designer Diana Nichols to thank for creating the official Vanessa-Wayne logo that will be used throughout my activities. But you don’t need to know a designer or spend big bucks to have this done. There are sites that let you design logos for free like http://logoease.com/, or try contacting design...

And the winner is….

The Point Clear Tennis and Swim Club!I couldn’t be more excited about this venue for my wedding reception. As I mentioned in a previous blog, I searched all over the Fairhope and Point Clear areas for a venue and wasn’t finding anything that suited my needs. Don’t get me wrong, there are a handful of beautiful properties, especially on the bay, but they weren’t for me.I chose the Point Clear Tennis and Swim Club because of its charm and blank slate. The building is completely covered with ivy from top to bottom and overlooks tennis courts. Do either Wayne or I play tennis? No. But the courts give the setting a different and relaxed feel. Plus they go with my color scheme of green, white and pewter. The blank slate provides me with the opportunity to design the...

Bridal Hospitality, Southern Style

I’ve had an overwhelming response to my engagement. People all over the Mobile Bay area are calling to say congrats, people I haven’t talked to in years are sending best wishes messages, and my family and friends — well I hear from them on a daily basis.Just as soon as I was engaged I was invited to NoJa to have a celebratory engagement dinner. If you haven’t been to NoJa yet, I strongly suggest it be the next place you eat dinner. When you go, ask for Chakli and tell him I sent you. The food is amazing and you really can’t beat the service. I’d like to give a special thanks to Mark, our server, for providing great recommendations and a top-notch experience! Then just this last weekend, the girls over at Something New on Old Shell Road in Mobile let me...

Eat Fresh!

Make eating fresh fruits and vegetables a priority to stay on top of healthy eating goals. Most people know that eating fresh produce is good for them, but many people overlook the benefits of fruits and vegetables purchased in season.Produce purchased in season is the freshest choice in the supermarket. In season fruits and vegetables are at both their flavor peak and nutritional peak. In addition, when produce is in season, the price typically drops substantially! This is great news for those of us looking to get the most nutritional bang for our buck. Seeking out the freshest fruits and vegetables is a great way to add variety to your meals, and prevent boredom that can send you off track.Citrus fruits, apples, pears, pomegranate, kiwi fruit, and cranberries are all at their...

Picture Perfect

Who is going to take the photos?Photos are just so permanent, which can be intimidating especially when a wedding is the subject matter. These printed images are forever, and we will look at them for the rest of our life. For me, selecting a photographer is a big decision.I’m having a really difficult time choosing a photographer for my wedding. I’ve worked with several great local ones who I know will do a great job. Others have shared a few recommendations. There are a few things that are very important to me in a photographer and his or her work:I lean more towards an artistic style for photos. Not a lot of posed pictures, please.  Must capture natural, intimate and fun moments that come with a wedding. Again, nothing staged.  Must be super nice and easy to work...

Stay Warm!

When the weather is cold (at least by South Alabama standards!) nothing tastes better than a cup of hot soup. However, many canned soups are loaded with sodium, which can increase risk of heart disease and stroke, raise blood pressure, and lead to bloating.Next time the temperature drops, warm up with this delicious lightened up, low sodium recipe for classic French Onion Soup. This soup can be made ahead of time and refrigerated; the flavor only improves! If preparing ahead of time, wait to top with toast until just before serving. Enjoy!Classic French Onion Soup2 tsp Olive Oil4 cups onion, thinly sliced1/2 tsp sugar or SplendaFreshly ground black pepper to taste1/2 cup dry red wine2 cups fat-free, low sodium chicken broth3 cups water1/4 tsp dried thyme4 (1/2 inch) slices French...

The Date

The Date

I have had my heart set on this one church for a while now: Sacred Heart Chapel in Point Clear. I don't know why it captivates me so. Maybe its simplicity, maybe its charm. Whatever it is, I knew my wedding date would be completely dependent on the availability of this church. Every wedding magazine says the first step you should make after you get engaged is to determine your deal-breaker. Well, this was mine.Sacred Heart was the first place I called when I got back into the states from Costa Rica. A very nice lady answered the phone and asked me when I was looking to get married. "May!" was my answer. I heard a little chuckle on the other end of the phone and then she let me down gently. May was completely booked. Hey, you never know unless you ask.For those of you who are...

Heart Month

This February, make a commitment to your heart. Unfortunately, Alabama has one of the highest percentages of heart disease in the nation. With a few heart healthy changes, you can prevent heart disease and live a healthier life. The American Heart Association encourages "The Simple 7" habits that can keep your ticker ticking.1. GET ACTIVE: Aim for 30 minutes of physical activity most days of the week. 2. CONTROL CHOLESTEROL: Know your numbers! If you haven't had your cholesterol checked recently, call and make an appointment. 3. EAT BETTER: Fruits and veggies, lean meats, low fat dairy, and whole grains are the basics for a healthy diet. 4. MANAGE BLOOD PRESSURE: Keep sodium intake in check. 5. The Ring

The Ring

It happened! The moment I've been wondering about most of my adult life. All my questions — Who would the guy be? What would our life be like? Where would I be living when it happened? How old would I be? — were answered on December, 1, 2010 while vacationing in Costa Rica. His name is Wayne Reyner, and just the thought of marrying him brings me to tears, in a good way. Now everything is real, and the planning has to start. I have planned dozens of events, mostly for clients. That's right. I am a professional event planner and have helped concept and execute some of Alabama's largest events. But this event is a tad different — it marks the start of my new life and is of the utmost importance to me. This will be much more of a challenge than any other event I've been...

What I'm Loving: Black Blazers

What I'm Loving: Black Blazers

WHAT TO LOOK FOR An updated take on the standard suit blazer of the 90's whether it be whimsical buttons, mild embellishment or the slightest ruffle. Just be sure the fit is slim, and shy away from the bulky shoulder pads. The key is for it to be simple yet stylish for ease in pairing with several different pieces. This way you will get the most miles out of your purchase. For inspiration I have chosen a black double knit blazer with a slight ruffle down the front. It is oh-so-soft and fits like a glove. Here are three different looks and how to achieve them. LOOK #1: Look of the Day This look is ideal for daytime. Whether you are meeting the girls for lunch, going to Junior's school play or simply running errands, this look is casual, classic and chic. GET THE LOOK Pair the blazer...
