Pet of the Week: Tilda

My name is Tilda and my owner could no longer keep me.  I am a ball of fun.  I do well on a leash.  I like the neighbor's kids.  My favorite activity is chasing the tennis ball. I love men as my former owner was male. I will be your devoted companion and the best TV buddy you will ever have. I am calm and laid back and just a great dog. I am 3 years old, housetrained, heartworm negative and just 17 pounds. If you would like to adopt me or my friends into your family, click here to complete the online adoption application or call 251-633-3531.

My Summer Saturday List (Part One)

Glistening streams of sunlight pour through the mini blinds of my small office window making patterns like vintage lawn chair slats on my carpet. The rays are just begging to tickle my cheeks while I push my babies on a swing set and sing silly songs. As a working mama, unfortunately, I don’t get to write a “What I Did on My Summer Break” essay. But, I’m not going to let that stop me from savoring the sunshine-y days ahead. On the bright side, there are 14 Saturdays between Memorial Day and Labor Day, and I intend to take full advantage of them. Now, excuse me while I daydream locally. In this three-part monthly series, I’ll share 14 fun must-dos for young families this summer. Try these five ideas for June. #1 Beach You to It At...

Pinterest Trend of the Week: Upcycled Doors

A DIY project is always enticing, but sometimes, pulling it off is a whole other story. Accept the challenge this weekend with a little upcycled inspiration. Start with an old door, add a little bit of creativity and elbow grease and call it your own. Happy crafting! 1. Floor-length mirror. Make a shabby-chic statement with a dramatic floor mirror. Simply lean against the wall to add character and open up a tight space. Source: dishfunctionaldesigns.blogspot.com via Mobile on Pinterest   2. Chalkboard calendar. The chalkboard craze is here to stay. Opt for chalkboard paint with a magnetic primer so you can easily affix pictures and reminders. Source: bit.ly via Mobile on Pinterest   3. Kitchen island. A Second Chance for St. Luke’s Baseball

Baseball season has yet again blessed us with its presence, and so far, its gods are shining their mercurial smile on the city of Mobile. The BayBears have begun their title defense with the best record in the Southern League, powered by tenacious pitching and some clutch performances at the plate. And that winning combination has caught on with at least one local high school team. For the second time in two years of fielding a varsity program, the St. Luke’s baseball team played in the 1A state semifinals Friday. After a bitter, lingering loss that brought an end to last year’s run, the young Wildcats maintained the determination and maturity to make sure this year was different. The team, which has still never had a senior player on its roster, defeated Maplesville...

Pinterest Trend of the Week: Kale

It’s no surprise this leafy green is sneaking its way into classic recipes. Kale is a sweet vegetable that is low in fat, high in fiber and has no cholesterol. It is loaded with vitamins A, C and K and rich in iron, calcium and other nutrients thought to be beneficial in warding off certain cancers. Plus, it’s extremely versatile; bake it, boil it, steam it…or try one of the delicious recipes below. Shrimp with Kale and Mushrooms 2 tablespoons butter 1 onion, thinly sliced 1 pound shiitake mushrooms, stemmed and thinly sliced 6 cloves garlic, chopped 2 bunches Lacinato kale, stemmed and chopped into bite-sized pieces 1 1/2 pounds shrimp, peeled and cleaned 2 tablespoons soy sauce 1/2 cup dry white wine 1/4 cup heavy cream (optional) 1....

Pet of the Week: Junie

Pet of the Week: Junie

Junie was adopted as a small puppy in December and can no longer keep her. She was just 10 weeks old when she was adopted — a tiny mite at three pounds.  She is seven months old now, and weighs 17 pounds. She knows the "sit" and "come" commands. She will "flip" and is very agile. She is almost housetrained (her previous owners kept her crated most of the time as they were not home and did not have a fenced yard). She is very social with kids and other animals.  She loves to play fetch, run and play ball. Junie is always happy and has a wonderful sweet, loving disposition. She is a barker when she wants attention. Junie is very smart, and she doesn't like to be alone. If you would like to adopt me adopt me or my friends into your...

Ode to Our Mothers

In our April issue, we divulged nearly 100 tips women should know in order to refer to themselves as true Mobile Bay ladies. You learned how to polish silver, write a proper thank-you note and how to catch a Mobile Bay man. But even with this advice in tow, it takes much more to be a Mobile Bay mom. In these parts, moms are more like superheroes. They are time-jugglers, top-notch cooks, constant caregivers and business professionals. They are always sophisticated and graceful, but also possess sharp wit and one of those “you’re in big trouble” kind of looks you never want to see. They are the special people who celebrate your accomplishments and love every single gift you give them, no matter how ridiculous it may be, because it’s the thought behind it...

Pet of the Week: Crosby

Pet of the Week: Crosby

My name is Crosby, and I was transferred from the County Animal Shelter. I am a calm, sweet, well-mannered little pup. I am a house dog, and I love, love, love my bed. After they tormented by children sticking things like straws up my nose, to be honest, I'm not very fond of kids anymore. I stopped them from doing that, but then I ended up on death row for protecting myself. I am 2 years old, heartworm negative and 11 pounds. If you would like to adopt me adopt me or my friends into your family, click here to complete the online adoption application or call 251-633-3531.

Pinterest Trend of the Week: Eye-Catching Headboards

Add a little pizzazz to any bedroom with a funky, unexpected headboard—it will set the tone for the whole room. 1. Orange Fabric Headboard In these parts, you either love or hate the color orange. This season, football fans can put their team loyalty aside to embrace Tangerine Tango, Pantone’s Color of the Year. Incorporate the color tastefully into your décor with a graphic fabric headboard. Silver studs give it a polished, sophisticated look. Source: homecreat.com via Lynda on Pinterest   2. Alphabet Headboard A fun arrangement of letters in various shapes, sizes and colors adds a modern touch to a guest bedroom or kid’s room.
