02/14/12This One’s For The BoysAs the 5-minute timer ticked at the bottom of my screen, I rushed to type my credit card information and seal the deal on what I believed to be the most amazing bargain on concert tickets I had ever seen. Floor seats at the upcoming concert of one of my fiancé’s favorite bands were going to be the perfect Valentine’s Day present. The location and price of these tickets were such a steal, it almost seemed too good to be true. That’s probably because it was. Approximately 15 seconds after I received my purchase confirmation email, the sad reality of what I had just done became clear. Parking passes. That’s right, parking passes. I hadn’t snagged amazing seats at the concert; I had snagged an amazing space in the parking lot. Now what?... |

02/07/12The HangoutLet (most of) the speculation end and the anticipation begin. After musician Jack White broke the news Friday that he would be performing at the Hangout Music Fest, festival organizers have followed suit and dished out the other artists playing in Gulf Shores this May. Headlining the event with White will be frat-party favorite Dave Matthews Band, along with other big names like Randy Newman, Wilco and the Flaming Lips, who were one of the highlights of last year’s weekend and will reportedly play an entire set of Pink Floyd’s “The Dark Side of the Moon.” As with any good music festival, the 2012 Hangout Music Fest offers something delicious for music fans of nearly any palate. Old darlings (Newman, DMB) will take the stage right after newer talents... |

02/07/12Pet of the Week: Sweet GideonMy name is Gideon, and I was found walking in the middle of a busy road. I recently had a sleep over at a foster home and they were very impressed with my excellent behavior! I am calm and easy going. I didn't care about the kitties. I played well, chasing balls with a 5-year old boy — I even loved it when he hugged me! I got to horse around with their dogs. I didn't get on the furniture. I didn't jump on them when I got excited! There were lots and lots of interesting things to chew on, but I didn't touch them. I took long naps. I rolled on my back and got belly rubs. I guess you could say I am maturing! I am almost a year old, heartworm negative and weigh about 50 pounds. Hopefully it won't be too much longer... |

02/03/12Pet of the Week: MaxHello, my name is Max! My owner had to move to Washington D.C. for a job. She would have liked to have taken me with her, but just wasn't able to. If you're looking for a great companion, I'm him! I am a calm and friendly guy. I will sleep at the foot of your bed and watch TV with you in the living room on the couch. Playing with dog toys and eating my dog cookies is so much fun for me. (Don't ask me to fetch the newspaper, though, because I will take it and shred it!) When it's bath time, I am good, which is helpful as I will need to be groomed regularly. I am 3 years old, am heartworm positive and weight 35 pounds. I look heavier because I have all that nice colorful hair! If you want to bring me home, click here for more information. |

01/26/12Pet of the Week: RobertaMy name in Roberta. I was part of a litter of four that was abandoned in Wilmer. A kind lady brought us to the Mobile SPCA. I have been spayed, vaccinated and microchipped. My brothers and sister were all adopted, and I am the last one that needs a home. I am a very nice puppy who is smart and eager to learn. I am learning crate training and will need regular puppy training. I have a darling underbite. I will be a medium sized, great family dog. I like other dogs, and I love to play! I will probably chase the cats — should the kitty smack me, I will run and hide like the puppy I am! I f you are interested in adopting me, call the Mobile SPCA at 633-3531. |

01/24/12Spring AwakeningMobile’s winter can be harsh — no, not in a bone-chilling cold, blinding blizzard kind of way, but in a dull drizzle, muggy gray kind of way. While our cold season is relatively short compared to the rest of the world, the dreariness outside makes it seem to last forever. For some reason, this seems to have a drastic effect on my style. From the start of December through the end of February, my wardrobe is full of blacks, navys and grays. At first, these outfits start out a classic, chic and sophisticated, but about midway through the season they start to become stale, boring and monotonous. And I start to daydream about the promising bursts of color that spring runway shows have foreshadowed. This spring’s color palette seems to be a combo of both bold and... |

01/20/12Pet of the Week: CassieMy name is Cassie, and I wandered up into somebody's yard as a stray. The neighbors wanted me gone, so they shot guns at me to scare me away. Luckily a very nice lady sheltered me until help arrived. I am very sweet and friendly. I go in my crate when told to, although it helps if there is a cookie in it waiting for me to devour. I can jump really high. A 6-foot fence and another dog to play with would be great for me. I love toys! I like to run around the yard and play chase with a toy in my mouth. Then I hide my toy in a safe place. I also love to play with kids. They keep me very entertained. I am very interested in kitties, but they just don't want to play with me. I like to go for rides and I love, love, love the water... |
01/19/12Whoa, Babies!“Don’t drink from the water fountain unless you want a sweet little bundle of joy nine months later!” We utter this phrase often around the Mobile Bay office— roughly once a month to be exact. That would be about how often we add a staff member or freelancer to our ranks of expectant mothers. (MAWSS is conducting an ongoing investigation into our H2O makeup. I kid.) Truly, we are a very small staff, yet we’re expecting half a dozen babies — one per month through this June. Yes, PMT Publishing is well on its way to filling an entire Little League infield. In the meantime, our male co-workers are bombarded with more detailed discussions of ultrasounds, blood pressure levels, cravings and hormonal changes than even the baby-daddies must endure.... |

01/12/12Pet of the Week: TrevorMy name is Trevor, and I was transferred from the city shelter as part of the Maddie's Pet Rescue Project. I am the most laid back, sweet boy! I love everyone, including kids. My tongue sticks out in a funny way that makes me look so adorable. I love to play, but I also like my naps. I have a very healthy and shiny coat. As I am not very active, don't feel like you have to play with me and walk me all the time. I just want to chill out and be loved on. I am 4 years old and weigh 45 pounds. I really am the perfect family dog! To learn how to adopt me or one of my buddies, click here. |

01/10/12Cooked to PerfectionWith the start of a new year comes the inevitable creation of a new list of resolutions. On Christmas morning, “Santa” brought me a nice collection of new appliances and tools for the kitchen. New pots and pans, glass bakeware, cookbooks and a wide variety of utensils left me pondering what hint Santa’s little elves were trying to leave me. As I flipped through each glossy page of the new, crisp cookbooks, it became evident that I was a cooking rookie. I stumbled upon recipes that had me questioning what in the world lentils, chutney or a crème fraîche was. I can’t help but blame my college years as the reason my idea of cooking is placing a bowl of “Easy Mac” into the microwave for exactly 2 minutes and 59 seconds (unfortunately... |
