Spirit of Mirth
    Thursday, February 11,  2010
   By: Mallory Boykin

Three Mardi Gras belles (former members of the court) put a modern spin on this season's head-turning fashions at downtown's Athelstan Club, a classic carnival locale.

Image information:

Main: Who needs beads with dazzling necklines like these? Merritt Courtney, far left, looks sophisticated in a black and white silhouette (Jovani). The sweeping white shoulder bow and asymmetrical neckline give new meaning to "black tie." METZGER'S, 3704 Dauphin St. 342-6336. Amanda Wilkins, center, works a black and gold, sweetheart-neck dress (Jovani). METZGER'S. Beaded rosettes make the strapless number pop. Frances Mosteller, right, will dance "teal" midnight in a bold trumpet gown (Jovani) with one flirty ruffled strap. METZGER'S.

Left: Rhinestones and pleats dress up a strapless, emerald cocktail dress (Phoebe Couture). Metzger's. Amanda, a 23-year-old real estate agent, is sure to turn heads in this glamourous ensemble. Oval, rhinestone earrings (J. Lauren). METZGER'S.

Center: Make waves on the dance floor in a navy, silk sheath (Marc Bower). UPTOWN. Ruffle and flower detail add drama.

Right: Amanda channels the 1920s flapper styles that were once all the rage at the Athelstan Club. A rhinestone belt (Vintage Couture) brings the look into the 21st century. Tiered black dress (Karen Lambos). UPTOWN, 400 Fairhope Ave. 928-7664.
