Cream & Sugar
    Thursday, September 2,  2010
   By: Sallye Irvine

Cream & Sugar is a sweet treat, not only for the Oakleigh Garden District but for all the Bay area. The pretty pink confection of a cottage, built around 1876, is decorated inside and out in Neapolitan hues of strawberry, chocolate and vanilla, The mind behind the petite eatery is Susan Carley, who also owns and operates The Palette Cafe in the Mobile Museum of Art. This latest culinary venture, open from dawn until well into the night, is down the block from the Oakleigh mansion. Desserts and coffee are the focus, but Cream & Sugar also offers several familiar favorites from The Palette Cafe. "We serve a light menu, but it's packed with flavor," Carley says.

The usual offerings include two soups, primarily tomato bisque and gumbo; two salads, shrimp remoulade and chicken salad; a quiche or two; and a couple of frittatas. They also serve breakfast sandwiches with a choice of egg, sausage, bacon or cheese on a homemade biscuit or croissant. One popular pick is the Savannah Casserole, a frittata-style dish that includes eggs, sausage, mushrooms and onions, with a crust of grits. Fresh fruit and cereal are also available.

Lots of folks come just for a slice of cake and a cup of coffee. The 14-layer lemon curd cake is the signature sweet, but the sumptuous strawberry cake is a winner as well. For chocoholics, delicious chocolate raspberry cake and miniature German chocolate cakes are outlandishly good and sized for sharing. If you're in the mood for a more petite sweet, consider sampling a dainty cake ball - lemon chocolate or red velvet. There are also iced cookies, scones, muffins and seasonal sweets, along with eight flavors of ice cream and a slew of festive toppings.

Cream & Sugar is not a bar. "We don't serve beer or highballs," Carley says. However, adult after-dinner drinks are on hand: ice cream drinks, spiked coffee, single malt scotch, wine, port and dessert martinis.

A fenced-in yard keeps children and pets corralled while the grown-ups enjoy their cappuccino. Other amenities include a bike rack, dog chains and a couple of dog bowls. Carley, a busy mother of two, hopes to capture a bit of the children's birthday business. Cream & Sugar has five party themes and an employee with an early education background who's dedicated to making sure the little ones have fun decorating cookies or cupcakes, making pizzas, or building ice cream sundaes.
