The Joe Cain Cafe is a chic, cosmopolitan addition to The Battle House's array of dining options. Open from dawn to late night, it is a fun, hip spot to stop on your way to, or from, a morning meeting or an evening event downtown.
The eatery offers a surprising variety of appetizers from Thai chicken lettuce wraps to baked brie and fruit, gargantuan nachos to Joe Cain wings.
For lunch, choose from tasty wraps and paninis, gourmet pizzas, salads and a couple of soups. The menu also showcases an intriguing assortment of specialty libations. A notable one is Joe Cain's Soon-To-Be-Famous Coconut Martini and Southern Iced Coffee, a potent potion of Starbucks coffee, Maker's Mark and butterscotch schnapps.
"We attract two different crowds," says Michael Canton, director of restaurant operations. "In the daytime, we serve Starbucks coffee drinks. At night we are a martini bar with live music. It is great place to have a business lunch then return to for happy hour," he says. Coffee and baked goods are always available, and the cafe serves breakfast every morning from six to ten o'clock, which includes quiche du jour, Belgian waffles and a breakfast wrap.
The rather funky decor is based on the locally infamous Joe Cain. The cafe entrance, on Royal Street, is marked by a huge Mardi Gras purple awning. Inside, the restaurant has a cool, big-city feel. The demi-lune shaped bar of lighted frosted panels is a focal point in addition to the big purple banquette, cleverly fashioned to resemble a crown.
There are flat screen televisions galore - literally a dozen or so tuned to different stations so you can stay abreast of current events as you sip that morning cup of Joe or maybe a midnight martini. Live music nightly starting at 8:30 p.m.
ON THE MENU: SEARED SASHI TUNA
This Port City favorite is served stylishly with wasabi-laced soy sauce, along with a colorful arrangement of pickled ginger, bean sprouts, cucumbers and julienned carrots.
ASIAN SALAD
This green salad is fresh and flavorful, blending sweet and savory. It includes mandarin oranges, crispy oriental noodles and a scattering of fresh bean sprouts. All elements are dressed with a sesame vinaigrette dressing.
grilled shrimp pizza
Insalata Caprese takes a trip to the beach and brings together both influences via grilled prawns atop a New York-style thin crust pizza, laden with molten-hot, fresh mozzarella cheese, Roma tomatoes and basil leaves.
